Olivia’s First Birthday Session | South Jersey Cake Smash Photography

There is something incredibly special about photographing a family as they grow, and this recent first birthday cake smash session in my South Jersey photography studio was such a full circle moment. I had the joy of photographing this sweet little girl as a newborn, and before that I captured her big brother Brooks’ cake smash session as well. Watching families return year after year and trusting me to document these milestones is truly the greatest honor.

This session was the perfect mix of timeless portraits and a playful first birthday cake smash, creating a gallery that beautifully celebrates her very first year.

Classic First Birthday Portraits on a Timeless Floral Backdrop

We started the session with classic portraits on a soft, timeless floral backdrop, which photographed beautifully and kept the focus right where it belongs – on Olivia’s sweet expressions and personality.

First birthday portrait sessions are always a favorite of mine because babies at this age are full of curiosity, giggles, and personality. These simple portraits allow parents to remember exactly what their little one looked like at this milestone moment.

A Simple and Sweet Pink Cake Smash Setup

For the cake smash portion of the session, I designed a setup that felt soft, sweet, and playful. I used the same brick backdrop that we used for her big brother Brooks’ cake smash session, which made the session feel extra meaningful for the family.

To complement the backdrop, I created a simple pink and white balloon arch with greenery, along with a small tent that added a whimsical touch to the set. The combination of textures—brick, soft balloons, and greenery—created a light and airy look that photographed beautifully.

The moment the cake was placed in front of her, the fun truly began. Like many one year olds, she was curious at first, gently exploring the frosting before diving into the cake and making the sweetest little mess.

Cake smash sessions are always unpredictable in the best way, some babies dive right in while others take their time exploring every little detail.

Capturing Another Milestone After Her Newborn Session

One of my favorite parts of this session was looking back at the newborn photos we captured when she was just days old. It’s incredible to see how much babies change during their first year.

Photographing both of her children—from newborn sessions to cake smash milestones—has been such a joy for this family. These are the moments that make being a photographer so meaningful.
